Understanding your online marketplace

Understanding your online marketplace is crucial for success and future planning. This article will primarily be focussing on an e-commerce website, however, any online marketing activities should be supported with an online marketplace report.

Understanding your or your clients’ online marketplace is all about getting a grasp on what your marketplace is doing, who your customers are, your competitors, influences and potential partners. Now your client/executive may already think they know this, but in my experience any insights your client/executive provides are usually based on opinions and not data. Read More…

  • Rate of response to the mail out was 62%
  • 10 000 website hits

IKEA: Klippbok iPad App

I love IKEA, even if I’m not buying anything I love walking around the endless maze looking at furniture and nicknacks… I freakin’ love nicknacks. I also love putting together the flat packs.

However my Girlfriend doesn’t share my passion for IKEA so is where this app comes in handy.

KLIPPBOK allows you to insert IKEA products into an empty space just like using a scrapbook. Read More…

Will AuthorRank force you to have an online spokesperson?

There is quite a bit of evidence to indicate that Google AuthorRank will be hitting us soon; just how long we have is really up to Google.

Mike Arnesen has written a great article on How to Prepare for AuthorRank which is well worth a read.

What I take away from Google AuthorRank articles is that it really focuses on the individual and not the organisation.

Company Spokesperson

If AuthorRank has a real focus on the individual, now, more than ever, is the time to get a spokesperson or a face for the company. Companies tend to be reluctant to give a face to their employees and if you don’t want your employees to be the face of the company then you need to hire a face, a spokesperson.

The cause of a 5650% spike in Facebook referrals

I’m not allowed to disclose the client, because my agency wasn’t looking after their social media, but I will describe how this spike occurred and what they were neglecting to do which meant they didn’t have this traffic in the first place.

To make things easier, we’re going to call the company Philip.

Alright… So Philip has just over 30,000 targeted Facebook fans and their engagement rates are quite good, however the referral rates to the website were averaging a mere two a day and they had only managed to make 21 sales from Facebook referrals from January to August this year.

The Philip Facebook page is professionally run, they have an interactive tab which directs to products on the website, and they also hold regular competitions. Read More…

Eight reasons why facebook is not going away

8 Reasons why Facebook will not be replaced by another social network and why Facebook isn’t going to die. Everyone who has ever said “Just Look at MySpace” was wrong.

8. Social Media is not a fad

Facebook isn't going awaySocial Media isn’t a fad; it’s a complete shift in the way we communicate. I think (older) people have finally come to the conclusion that social media is here to stay. This has become a fair dinkum industry.

The most painful conversion I have to listen to is my 42 year old father and my 66 year old grandmother – my parents were young – discuss how terrible Facebook and Twitter is and the fact that they don’t get it. I try to explain, but it’s tough to crack into a closed mind… that’s cool, my Nanna still thinks the moon landing was a hoax. (<3 you Nanna)

I think most people agree that Social Media is here to stay. I know this video is from 2009 and most of you will be aware of the stats but give it a watch anyway. Read More…

Why I don’t like to call myself an SEO

Search Engine Optimisation is a very different environment than it was 12 months ago. Google have shut down a lot of common tactics that used to increase rankings and it’s an all too common belief that SEO is dead.

To me, SEO is technical. It’s about making sure your website is fast, has clean URLs, doesn’t have duplicate content, is indexed, has meta and open graph tags, and has valid mark-up. After that Search Engine Optimisation stops… and you begin HIO, Human Interest Optimisation. (Alright, it probably needs a better name)
